Lead Poisoning Prevention and Remediation

Lead is a poisonous metal that was previously used in paint, gasoline, and other products (and it’s still used in some products today). Most housing units in Allegheny County were built before 1980, when lead paint was banned. That means that many of our homes still have lead paint in the walls and can be hazardous to our health - especially to our children’s health.  According to the Allegheny County Health Department, about 2.7 % of tested children in Allegheny County had elevated blood levels in 2025. In this workshop, representatives from the Lead Safe Allegheny coalition discuss the threat that lead poses, where you might encounter lead, how you can minimize the risk of lead poisoning, and what resources are available to help remove it from your home. Environmentally-safe cleaning products and other giveaways may be available for in-person sessions.

Tenants Rights

Hosted by: Partners from the Housing Justice Table

Format: Online or in-person

Landlords in PA are required to provide safe, sanitary, and habitable housing to renters. In this workshop, members of the Housing Justice Table coalition will present information about tenants’ rights in PA and Allegheny County, including the right to habitable housing, the right to due process in an eviction proceeding, and the right to organize or join a tenant association or tenant union. Resources will also be shared on where tenants can go to get guidance or support. This workshop can be tailored to the needs and goals of your group.

Explore a free online tool for looking up property information on homes, buildings, and lots across the county. This tool shows basic property information, such as ownership and code violations, and other important information, such as whether a building has lead pipes. At this workshop, staff from WPRDC will lead a conversation on ways community groups and housing advocates can use the tool for their advocacy work. Parcels N’At is useful for organizing, advocacy, and understanding what's happening with houses and ownership on your block and in your community.

Many of our communities include neighbors who speak other languages and may be learning to speak English. They may want to attend meetings or events in their community. They may need support services from neighborhood groups and non-profits. Interpreters can help community groups communicate with English Language Learners to help everyone feel included in the conversation and included in the community. This workshop provides community groups and non-profit organizations with guidance on best ways to work with interpreters in a variety of situations.

Age-Friendly Greater Pittsburgh is dedicated to making our region a better place to grow up and grow older. Allegheny County is one of the oldest regions in the country, and Age-Friendly embraces that as an opportunity for intergenerational connection and collaboration. The Age-Friendly team can provide educational sessions or in-depth training on age-friendly principles and best practices for age inclusion. Age-Friendly also has a Community Panel, which is a ready-made focus group of primarily older residents who are trained and paid to provide lived-experience consultation to organizations and businesses.
